Dolphin Habitat Site

The Dolphin Habitat Site is situated at Kampi Village, only 15 km away from Kratie Town. Nature lovers and wildlife conservationists consider it as the best spot to watch the Irrawaddy dolphins. These Mekong dolphins are put on the critically endangered list of marine species that lives in the freshwater. It is estimated that there are between 66 and 86 dolphins left in the upper Cambodian Mekong area. Therefore, the Dolphin Habitat Site plays a significant role in the conservation of these dolphins, rather than a tourist attraction.

Friendly local riding his ox cart in Koh Trong Island.

Koh Trong is a bucolic island opposite the riverfront of Kratie Town. It actually looks like an almighty 6km-long sandbar in the middle of the river. The only way to access Koh Trong is taking 5-minute wooden public ferry from the pier in front of Jasmine Boat Restaurant in downtown Kratie. On arrival, you can go directly to the Community Based Tourism Center where you can hire bicycles or ox-carts, book homestay if you wish to spend an overnight stay here.

The nine-kilometer trail in a narrow concrete path around the island will bring tourists through the lush and unspoilt rural Cambodian scenery filled with palm trees, paddy fields, market gardens and pretty Khmer-style wooden houses. At the southern tip of the island located a small Vietnamese pagoda and floating Vietnamese village.

An impressive line of monk statues standing along the way up to the top of Phnom Sombok.

Phnom Sombok is a small Buddhist temple perched high on a hillock, which is located 10 km north of Kratie Town. Being built in the 15th century, the temple is dedicated to a Buddhist monk named Neak Voan, who resided, meditated and taught his disciples here. Situated in between two mountain peaks, Phnom Sombok boasts scenic panorama views of Mekong River. To reach the main temple on top, visitors need to climb about 300 stairs and are impressed by the long line of life-sized monk statues forming a guard of honor.

Wat Rokar Kandal

Wat Rokar Kandal

Wat Rokar Kandal – the rare traditional wooden pagoda, was restored and converted into a small local handicraft center

Just only 2-3 km south of Kratie on the road to Chhlong is Wat Rokar Kandal. Dating from the 19th century, this is one of the oldest temple in the region. In dry season from January to May, locals go picnic here on weekends or public holidays. When water level in this part of Mekong drops sufficiently in dry season, many sandbars appear then wooden platforms are quickly established over these grounds with cool shady roofs. Hammocks and mats are available for rent by the hour. Wooden bridges are also set up to allow easy access to floating cottages.

It’s so perfect to spend a lazy and slow day in this scenic spot, swim in the refreshing waters, chill out with local snacks and cold drink. You can bring your own stuffs, otherwise there is a bunch of knick-knack shops and stalls selling local food and drinks on site.

Royal Ploughing Ceremony

Royal Ploughing Ceremony is held in open field near the National Museum and next to the Royal Palace.

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony, or also called Bon Chroat Preah Nongkoal, is an ancient royal rite celebrated for hundreds of years in Cambodia to mark the beginning of the rice growing season as well as rainy season. According to a book of governing traditional rules named Satra, Khmer people prepared for their farming activities at the beginning of rainy season. One of the main purposes of this ceremony is wishing a bountiful harvest for farmers.

On this occasion, King will plough a field with two royal oxen. Then Queen (or someone assigned in King’s palace) will sow the field with rice seeds. A group of royal servants will follow King and Queen, bring several trays of rice, corn, sesame seeds, beans, grass, water, and wine. After the field is ploughed and sowed three times, there will be an interesting event of royal oxen’s predictions. The future events of the upcoming rice growing season will depend on what the oxen eat among above trays.

Cambodian Architecture – Ancient Khmer Architecture

The iconic Angkor Temples during the growth and peak of Khmer Empire have always been the great crowd puller, which attracts people from all over the world coming to the Kingdom of Wonders. However, Cambodian architecture is not only synonymous with ancient Khmer architecture because beyond Angkor Wat, there are still lots of masterpieces from French colonial architecture and New Khmer architecture built throughout the country.

Ancient Khmer Architecture

Also known as Angkorian architecture, ancient Khmer architecture was produced by the Khmers during the Angkorian era of the Khmer Empire, which flourished from approximately the 9th to 15th centuries. During the period of Angkor, non-religious buildings such as dwellings were constructed by poorly exploited materials like wood whereas temples and other religious buildings were built by stone. Therefore, all the remaining Angkorian buildings are religious sites in nature. The emphasis of Angkorian architecture’s study is necessarily on religious architecture.

Under the Khmer Empire, temples were constructed in accordance to the rule of ancient Khmer architecture and developed in stages, which are preserved in many magnificent buildings of the Angkor Temples. Angkorian architects and sculptors created temples with basic layout of a central sanctuary, a courtyard, enclosure, and a surrounding moat. Elements and motifs were inspired by religion and mythical creatures from Hinduism and Buddhism. However, not all of these features were equally in evidence throughout the Angkorian period because a number of different architectural styles succeeded one another.

Angkor Wat – the most outstanding religious architecture during the Angkorian era of the Khmer Empire.

1.1. Materials

Khmer master craftsmen used brick, sandstone, laterite and wood for their main structures. However, the wood elements having been lost due to destructive processes so the ruins remain of brick, sandstone and laterite.

  • Brick is the main material to construct the earliest Angkorian temples such as Preah Ko, Lolei, Bakong. Decorations were not carved directly into the brick, but through a stucco applied to the brick because brick is soft material. Brick is not as strong as stone so it was used to build relatively small temples such as Preah Ko and Lolei.
  • Sandstone used by Angkorian builders were obtained from the Kulen plateau, the closest to Angkor being some 30 kilometers away. Initially, this material was used for particular elements like door frames due to the complicated process of transferring it from Kulen to construction site. Takeo is possibly the first Angkorian temple to be built entirely in sandstones, which were cut into a regular size and placed in position.
  • Laterite was used for foundations and other hidden parts of buildings due to its characteristic. When taken from the ground, it is soft but become harder when exposed to the sun. Laterite was used in the underlying layers of Angkor Wat and other large temples where the water level was high. This material could absorb and strengthen temples’ stability.

1.2. Structures

  • Temple mountain: During the Angkorian period, the dominant construction layout of state temples was form of temple mountain. This architectural style represented Mount Meru – home of the devas in Hindu mythology, and was influenced by South Indian temple architecture. The temple was constructed in the shape of steeped pyramid, with the highest elevated sanctuary put at the center as the home to the temple’s primary deity. Surround the temple are enclosures representing mountain chains and a moat representing ocean. Temple mountains in Angkor include Bakong, Baphuon, Pre Rup, Ta Keo, Koh Ker, Phimeanakas, and Phnom Bakeng.
  • Central sanctuary: Traditionally called as Bakan, the central sanctuary held the main shrine of the temple’s primary deity – Shiva or Vishnu in a Hindu temple, Buddha or a bodhisattva in a Buddhist temple. The shrine must be large enough to hold the statue or linga, which represents for the deity. This sanctuary is located at the center of the temple and at the highest level.
  • Prang: It is a richly carved tower-like spire. This structure has receding size as it ascends, which reminds of Indic shikhara of Hindu temple. Prang represents peak of Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology.
  • Enclosure: A concentric series of walls surrounded Khmer temples represent the mountain ranges surrounding Mount Meru. These walls are divided by enclosures, which are numbered from the centre outwards.
  • Gallery: Gallery is a passageway lining along the walls defining the Khmer temples’ enclosures or temple’s axis. This form evolved during the 10th century when the long hallways were used to surround the temple’s central sanctuary. Then additional half galleries on one side were introduced in the first half of 12th century during the period of Angkor Wat.
  • Gopura: An entrance building or entrance pavilion to access a temple. Gopura was constructed with enclosures surrounding a temple and placed at each of the four cardinal points. Gopuras are often impressively decorated with lintels and pediments. Gopuras in Angkor Thom which are adorned with gigantic stone faces are among the most photographed points in Angkor Park.
  • Library: Even being the common feature of Khmer temple architecture, the true purpose of library remains unknown. They are free standing buildings which were normally placed in pairs on either side of an enclosure’s entrance and open to the west. Angkor Wat’s libraries exceptionally open to both the East and the West.
  • Baray: Baray is a giant water reservoir made by excavation and embankment, respectively. The significance of baray is still mysterious. There is speculation that it was part of irrigation system but some believe that it served for religious purpose. There is a temple on an artificial island located in the center of baray. In the middle of the baray associated with Preah Khan stands the 12th century temple of Neak Pean. West Baray – the largest reservoir in Angkor, homes the 11th century West Mebon at its center.
  • Naga bridge: There is a nine headed serpent in the shape of a fan is adorned on each side of the bridge leading to entrance gate of temples in Angkor. The naga’s whole body extends the length of the bridge, forming a barrier over the edge of the bridge. This representation may symbolize the transition from the world of men to the world of the gods, and reinforced by Indra’s presence.

Cambodia - Naga Bridge at Kampong Kdei

Naga Bridge – a nine headed serpent in the shape of a fan is adorned on the bridge leading to entrance gate of temples in Angkor.

1.3. Elements

  • Bas-reliefs are figures or entire scenes sculpted into stone walls. They are narrative bas-reliefs depicting stories from mythology and history. The external gallery wall in Angkor Wat is covered with around 13,000 square meters of narrative bas-reliefs mentioning about historical and mythological scenes. The medieval Khmer’s everyday life as well as historical events from the reign of King Jayavarman VII are the main topics of bas-reliefs in the Bayon’s outer gallery.
  • Stairs in Angkor Temples are notoriously steep with an angel of ascent between 45 and 7-0 degrees. This steep stairway represents the “stairway to heaven”, “the realm of the gods” from the religious perspective. According to Angkor-scholar Maurice Glaize, the monumental point of view for this peculiarity is that “the square of the base not having to spread in surface area, the entire building rises to its zenith with a particular thrust”.

1.4. Motifs

  • Apsara: celestial dancing girls – found at Preah Khan, Bayon, Angkor Wat.
  • Devata: minor female deities – found at Preah Khan, Bayon, Angkor Wat.
  • Dvarapala: demonic temple guardians with clubs and lances – seen at Banteay Kdei, Banteay Srei, Preah Khan, Preah Ko and Lolei.
  • Gajasimha: mythical animal with lion’s body and elephant head, temple guardian – found at Banteay Srei and Rolous Group.
  • Reachisey: mythical animal with lion’s head, dragon’s body and a short elephant trunk – found at Angkor Wat’s outer gallery.
  • Garuda: half man – half bird, lord of birds.
  • Kala: a ferocious monster with only the head with a large upper jaw depicted, no lower jaw.
  • Linga: cylinder symbolic of the Hindu God Shiva and creative power. It was places in the central sanctuary to represent king himself and express his consubstantially with Shiva.
  • Naga: a snake with multiple heads, always in uneven number and arranged in a fan. Nagas were symbols of water and also characters in other well-known legend “the churning of the Ocean of Milk” and stories depicted in Khmer art. Mucalinda was the serpent king who protected the meditating Buddha from torrential rains with its hoods.
  • Quincunx: a spatial arrangement of five elements to convey the five peaks of Mount Meru. This arrangement can be found in designs of East Mebon with five brick towers, or in the riverbed carvings in Kbal Spean.
  • Shiva: Angkorian Khmer worshipped Shiva in the form of a linga at most Angkor Temples. He is one of principle deities of Hinduism.
  • Vishnu: He is one of principle deities of Hinduism.

2. French Colonial Architecture

Cambodia was a French protectorate within French Indochina during French Colonial Empire from 1863 until its official independence in 1953. During this period, the French built many constructions throughout the country with administrative offices, banks, hospitals, hotels, schools and so on. psar nat market Krong Battambang Cambodia

Psar Nat Market – the best-preserved French colonial architecture in Battambang.

  • Psar Nat Market built in the 1930s shares the similarities in the Art Deco design of Phnom Penh Central Market and Ben Thanh Market in Saigon (Vietnam). Because all three markets were designed by the same French architect.
  • Colonial Quarter is situated along the riverfront, especially along 2 blocks at the south of Psar Nat Market. Along Street 3 east of the train station are shop houses are also fine examples of the French architecture of the early 20th century.

2.3. Kampot

The Columns

3. New Khmer Architecture

New Khmer Architecture is the architecture movement in Cambodia during the 1950s and 1960s, after Cambodia gained its independence from France in 1953. Prince Norodom Sihanouk, who won the elections in 1955, was a visionary leader. He desired to lead Cambodia to become an integral part of the world then made all-encompassing effort to modernize all aspects: agriculture, infrastructure, industry, education, health care, tourism and arts.

Modern movements were blended with the grand tradition of Angkor and the vernacular tradition of locals’ ordinary houses, labeling the country with many buildings in the style of New Khmer Architecture. The use of assertive structures and reinforced concrete are the main characteristics of this movement.

To deal with local tropical climate, structures are raised on columns to create natural cooling effects, as well as open shaded spaces for social activities. And the height of buildings as the method of protection in flooding times. Other vernacular traditions adapted are wall panels and with double walls and roofs to avoid direct sunlight.
The use of moats and raised walkway are inspired by the Angkor tradition. The main function of moat is a water reservoir in wet season and becomes a cooling device in dry season. Distinctive examples of this approach are the Teacher Training College and the National Sports Complex.

National Sports Complex by Vann Molyvann Phnom Penh Cambodia

The National Sports Complex in Phnom Penh, designed by Vann Molyvann, is one of the most distinctive examples of New Khmer Architecture.

At the beginning period of New Khmer Architecture, foreign influences were highly evident in the style and there was not any qualified Cambodian architect or engineer. Or young qualified architects returned from abroad were lack in experience. Until 1965, the newly founded Royal University of Fine Arts began teaching architecture. From then, many talented architects contributed to create the successful era of New Khmer Architecture. Among them, Vann Molyvann was the most famous architect of this school.

He was the designer for a number of prominent landmarks in Phnom Penh such as the Olympic Stadium, the Chatomuk Theatre and Independence Monument. These structures integrated international architectural elements with local tradition, materials and climate. Phnom Penh Weather & Climate

Primarily influenced by tropical monsoons, Phnom Penh experiences two distinct seasons: wet and dry. No matter which season it is, the city is hot year round with only minor variations. Average temperatures fluctuate around 22 to 35°C.

Cambodia-Phnom-Penh-Central-Market

Central Market is the largest market in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

From June to October, the southwestern moisture monsoon winds from Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand bring wet season to Phnom Penh. During this rainy season, the daily temperature remains high (25 – 32°C) but becomes mildly manageable towards the evenings thanks to short downpours in the afternoon. The heaviest precipitation happens from September to October, at approximate 225 – 255 mm (8.9 to 10 in) with average rainy days of 18 per month. Consequently, this latter part of the monsoon period has the highest potentiality of flooding, especially in the area crossed by the great rivers.

The dry season in Phnom Penh lasts from November to May, with the appearance of the northeast monsoon. In November and December, the daytime temperature is 30°C, then continues to rise in January with an average of 35°C and reaches its peak at or upper 40°C in April – the hottest month of the year. Coming to latter part of dry season (March to May), the chances of rain are almost non-existent. Therefore, water levels in rivers and lakes are very low, which makes river cruising much more difficult and waste more travel time.

November to February are the best time to visit Phnom Penh, also coincides with the peak tourism period. During this time, touring Phnom Penh is smooth and not prevented by heavy rainfall, strong sunshine and other weather-related issues.

Transportation from-to/in Phnom Penh

By Air

Phnom Penh Airport

Phnom Penh International Airport is the largest airport in Cambodia.

Phnom Penh International Airport, which is situated 10 km northwest of Phnom Penh’s center, is the largest airport in Cambodia. Domestic flights connect Phnom Penh to other two main tourism hubs of Siem Reap and Sihanouk Ville via national airlines: Cambodia Airways, Cambodia Angkor Air, Lanmei Airlines.

It’s quite convenient for international passengers to start or end their Cambodia trip in Phnom Penh because its airport serves many major international airlines, such as: China Southern Airlines (China), China Eastern Airlines (China), Cathay Pacific Air (Hong Kong), EVA Air (Taipei), All Nippon Airways (Japan), Vietnam Airlines (Vietnam), Malaysia Airlines (Malaysia), Philippines Airlines (Philippines), Qatar Airways (Qatar), Silk Air (Singapore), Korean Air (South Korea), Bangkok Airways (Thailand).

From the airport to city center, there are several options of transportation: city bus number 3 operates from 5 AM to 8:30 PM with fare around 0.4 USD; non-stop 30-minute train journey from airport’s parking area to Phnom Penh railway station in city center; or other private vehicles like tuk tuk, taxi or private car/van depending on travelers’ budgets.

By Road

Road transfer

Phnom Penh serves as country’s transportation hub for many domestic bus routes to major tourist destinations.

Due to huge development through improving national highway systems, together with its central location, Phnom Penh serves as country’s transportation hub for many domestic bus routes to major tourist destinations like Siem Reap, Sihanouk Ville, Kampot, Kep, Koh Kong, Battambang, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, Stung Treng. Budgeted travelers can choose public bus to move between Phnom Penh and neighboring countries like Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), and Thailand (Bangkok).

In Phnom Penh, there are more than dozen bus companies offering regularly scheduled buses but Giant Ibis and Mekong Express are two most popular ones with good standard of service, safety and comfort. Each bus company departs and arrives from its office or makes drop-off and pick-up at the most convenient tourist areas. Complimentary pickup service is offered to passengers staying at partner hotels of bus company. In case passengers don’t use free pick up, they should arrive to bus company office 30 minutes before departure time.

To get around the city, Phnom Penh City Bus is the cheapest option with the fare of 0.37 USD per voyage irrespective of distance. However, air-conditioned public buses only operate with 3 lines from 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Outside these hours, passengers have to look for other means of transport. Bus Line 01 is the most frequent route because it stops at the main tourist sites in the city: Wat Phnom, Central Market, further walking: Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Olympic Stadium, Royal Palace and National Museum.

Private vehicles like taxi and hired car/van can bring more flexibility and hassle-free travel around the town. However, taxi fares must be agreed in advance and sometimes, foreigners may meet taxi driver with little English speaking to make smooth conversation. Therefore, private car with experienced driver can help you a lot to visit main sites in and around the city, and avoid massive traffic jams in this bustling capital.
Within short distance, tourists can hire tuk tuk or bicycle with very cheap fee for 1 – 3 USD per day for short journey.

tuk tukTuk tuk is a ubiquitous sight throughout Phnom Penh, as well as Cambodia.

By Waterway

Besides travelling by air and by road transfer, more adventurous tourists can take the option of ferry boat between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Although it will be a memorable experience with stunning scenery along the way, the journey will be much longer than via road. Daily ferry departs at 7 AM from the Phnom Penh Port on Sisowath Quay and lasts 7 – 8 hours. Passengers should buy the ferry ticket one day in advance through guesthouses, hotels or travel agencies at the cost of around 18 – 25 USD.

Ferry journey is best operated during wet season (July to November). This service closes at the peak of dry season (April to June) when the water levels are too low to cross the river and may occur occasional grounding issues. For safety reasons, this mean of transportation is not recommended for foreigners because ferries Phnom Penh – Siem Reap are local transport and experienced breakdowns, and other grounding difficulties.

This journey lasts around five hours, including the visa formalities at the Vinh Xuong/Kaam Samnor border crossing point. At this border, Vietnam Visa should be arranged in advance to avoid time consuming, unless you are exempt. Meanwhile, Cambodia Visa on arrival is available with minor overcharging so tourists should plan on paying 34 USD (cash only).

Hang Chau Speedboat is the most popular boat service running between Chau Doc and Phnom Penh. Its boat departs Chau Doc daily at 7:30 AM, arriving Phnom Penh at around 12:30 PM then immediately makes the return journey in the afternoon of the same day. Cambodia Weather in April

Cambodia experiences the hottest period in the month of April. However, don’t let the heat stop you from exploring this magnificent destination because April in Cambodia is not bad as the label implies. If tourist numbers are taken into account rather than the weather factor, you are strongly suggested to visit Cambodia in April because there will be fewer tourists during this time thanks to April’s heat. Keep reading our post about Cambodia Weather in April to get more information to have a well-planned holiday in Cambodia.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Cambodia Climate in April
  • 2. Suggested Places to Visit in April
  • 3. Cambodian Events in April
  • 4. What to Pack to Visit Cambodia in April?

1. Cambodia Climate in April

April is considered the last month of the dry northeast monsoon so Cambodia weather during this time is generally fine but very humid. Average temperature fluctuates around 35°C but sometimes the country gets scorching hot when the mercury hits the 40°C’s. Big cities in lowland areas like Siem Reap and Phnom Penh experience average temperature of 31°C,  sometimes touching 35°C. Temperatures in the southern coastal Sihanouk Ville range from 26°C to 32°C.

The possibility of rain is quite dismal making the terrain dusty with little vegetation. However, the rainy season is just around the corner so visitors can expect the odd showers to the parched land by the month end. However, these downpours are short lived during this time of the year.

2. Suggested Places to Visit in April

Sightseeing and travelling around Cambodia in sweltering heat and oppressive humidity of April can be wearying for many tourists. It can be a real burden if trying to walk along the streets, explore the temples without ventilation, and hike in the jungle during the full day trip. However, this may not seem that bad as many people exaggerate Cambodia’s hot and dry weather in April.

angkor thom cambodia

To avoid the heat of midday, shorter visits in early morning and/or late afternoon are recommonded.

In addition, it depends on how people are aware of and ready to react to the heat. Sensible tourists can dress appropriately, keep an eye on their fluid intake and most importantly adjust their pace of tour activities. For example, instead of making all day exploration of Angkor Temples, tourists should plan for shorter stints in early morning and/or late afternoon. At midday when the heat reaches its peak, short break at the hotel’s swimming pool or at air-condition restaurants or tourist venues is not a bad idea. On the other hand, the summer heat has its advantage of thinning out the tourist crowds at the main temples in specific time of the day.

Tourists can escape from the heat with a trip Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri in north east regions of Cambodia. Lots of sunshine, cooler temperatures (average temperature 27°C), extremely low chance of raining are great conditions to experience adventure activities like trekking into jungles or interact with wildlife in these places.
More sun seekers have no reason to delay their R&R (rest and relax) time on the south coast beaches of Kep, Sihanouk Ville or head to more deserted pristine islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem.

South coastal beaches and islands in April are in good conditions with lots of sunshine and low chance of rain.

3. Cambodian Events in April

April in Cambodia comes with a sense of celebration because it’s the month of Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey) – the biggest and most important festival of the year in the country. This special occasion lasts for three days in Khmer calendar, which usually falls between 13th and 17th April. This time marks the end of harvesting season and farmers celebrate their successful crops before the new agricultural season starts in coming rainy period.

During this time, the whole country is in a standstill as government offices, some marketplaces and several tourist sites are closed. This is the precious time for Khmer people to reunite with their family, friends and community, visit temples to seek blessings, as well as participate in traditional games. Seemingly the entire population of Cambodia celebrate the new year with great merriment on the streets. People are at their playful best by mingling and splashing water around. This unique way of celebration really cools you down under the sweltering heat of April.

If you are in Cambodia during this great holiday, be ready to get wet and soak each other with water. Otherwise, you should stay indoor and avoid venturing outside.

Visiting Cambodia during a festival can be a great experience for those seeking a closer look into Cambodia’s diverse culture and history. However, tourists should be aware of some delays and longer journeys because the roads are filled with Khmer families visiting temples, relatives and friends.

4. What to Pack to Visit Cambodia in April?

More importantly, even you take the trips under the heat and sunshine of Cambodia’s weather in April, you are strictly required to follow dress code in Angkor Area and other spiritual/cultural places dotted across the country: shoulders and knees must be covered.

Cambodia weather in March 2023

In March, the weather conditions are expected to be excellent throughout Cambodia. During this month, it’s suitable and safe to take all kinds of activities, even trekking in the northeast or scuba diving in the southern coast. Here are things you might need to know about Cambodia weather in March to plan your adventure there.

1. Cambodia Climate in March.

Tuk tuk

Tourists take tuk tuk to visit Angkor Temples to avoid sunlight heat in the middle of the day.

March generally can be considered as the start of summer in Cambodia when temperatures start really heating up in preparation for the humidity of April. Average temperature in Siem Reap is 30°C. The afternoons experience the highs of a sweltering 34°C and temperature drops slightly to 25°C at night time. In the coastal region of Sihanouk Ville, temperatures hover around 32°C in day time and 26°C after dark. Destinations like Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri in the north east region receive cooler temperatures with an average of 26°C.
This month is identified with great sunshine and pleasant weather. A few rainfalls make their appearance in the month of March, apart from baby showery blessings.

2. Suggested Places to visit in March.

No matter where you plan to visit in Cambodia at this time of year, there is glorious sunshine and the chances of rain are almost non-existent. Throughout the March, the UV levels can be high so don’t forget to regularly reapply sun cream and wear a hat or bring umbrella to protect your skins.

Angkor Wat sunrise

High temperatures in March urge tourists to visit Angkor Wat at its best time of the day: sunrise.

Don’t be frustrated by the high temperature in March because at least the advantage of visiting Cambodia during this time is that the tourist crowds start noticeably thinning out. The hot temperatures can be avoided by not planning your excursions to Angkor Temples or any outdoor activities as the whole day from morning to afternoon. Instead, just wisely save your sightseeing in the cooler times like early mornings and late afternoons. The middle hours of the day should be spent having lunch in the air-con restaurants, relaxing in the swimming pool or taking break in the comfort of your hotel’s room.

Dry weather and little or no rain in March creates a great time for adventurous travelers to head into the jungles of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, where trekking paths are more accessible and less aggressive mosquitos.

Pchum Ben Day

Pchum Ben Day 2022

Date: Sep 24, 25, 25 2022 .October is the month when Cambodian people celebrate the festival of Pchum Ben Day. Together with Khmer New Year in April, Phchum Ben is the most important festival in the Khmer religious calendar. Cambodians have faithfully observed the festival every year for as long as anyone can remember.

The word ‘Ben’ in Khmer means to collect; ‘Ben’ also means to cup or mould cooked rice into portions. To ‘Ben Baht’ means to collect food to give to monks. The word ‘Phchum’ means to congregate or to meet together. Regardless how busy they may be during the fifteen Pchum Ben Day.

Cambodian people try not to miss a visit to the pagoda to dedicate food and offerings to the dead.
The festival’s final day, September 28th, is the actual day of Phchum Ben, when people traditionally meet together at the pagoda, said the Venerable Ly Sovy of Lang Ka pagoda.

By doing this, Cambodians show respect for their ancestors. Everyone goes to the pagoda every year to honor this tradition, and nobody complains.

“According to [Buddhist] belief, people feel sorry for and remember their relatives who have passed away,” Ly Sovy said. “They may be their parents, grandparents, a sister, a brother, daughter or son.”

Om Sam Ol, a monk at Steung Meanchey pagoda, explained more about the beliefs behind the festival: “During Phchum Ben, souls and spirits come to receive offerings from their living relatives,” he said.

“It is believed that some of the dead receive punishment for their sins and burn in hell – they suffer a lot and are tortured there,” he added. “Hell is far from people; those souls and spirits cannot see the sun; they have no clothes to wear, no food to eat,” Om Sam Ol continued. “Pchum Ben Day is the period when those spirits receive offerings from their living relatives and perhaps gain some relief. Relatives consecrate and dedicate food and other offerings to them.”

Everyone goes to the pagoda because they don’t want the spirits of dead members of their family to come to seek offerings at pagodas in vain. It is believed that wondering spirits will go to look in seven different pagodas and if those spirits can not find their living relatives’ offering in any of those pagodas, they will curse them, because they cannot eat food offered by other people,” the monk said.

“When the living relatives offer the food to the spirit, the spirit will bless them with happiness”, he added.

According to the monk, legend has it that Phchum Ben came about because relatives of King Bath Pempeksa defied religious customs and ate rice before the monks did during a religious ritual. After their death, they became evil spirits.

He explained that later when a monk known as Kokak Sonthor gained enlightenment and became a Buddha on earth, all those evil spirits went to ask him “when can we eat?”
The Buddha said “you have to wait for the next Buddha in the Kathakot Buddhist realm. In this realm, evil spirits cannot eat.”

When the next monk, Kamanou, achieved enlightenment and became a Buddha, all the evil spirits came again to ask the same question, and he gave the same answer as the previous Buddha.

Later another monk, Kasakbour, achieved enlightenment and became a Buddha, and the hungry evil spirits again asked him the same question. The Buddha told them the same thing – to wait for the next Buddha.

The final Buddha, Preah Samphot – also known also as Samanakkodom – said to the evil spirits, “Wait for your relative, King Bath Pempeksa, to offer merits and dedication. When the dedication is made, the food will be yours to eat.”

King Pempeksa finally made an offering, but he did not dedicate the offering to the spirits of his relatives. All the spirits that were related to him cried that night. And when King Bath Pempeksa went to the Valovan pagoda to visit the Buddha, he was told by the Buddha that, “Pchum Ben Day 2022 All the spirits of your relatives are crying, demanding food. The spirits should get food in the realm of Kathakot. Although you offered food and did good deeds, you did not dedicate the food and good deeds to them.” So King Bath Pempeksa made another dedication and offering, and this time he dedicated the food and merits to his relatives. The evil spirits received the dedication and were finally reborn into paradise

“It is believed that some of the dead receive punishment for their sins and burn in hell – they suffer a lot and are tortured there,” he added. “Hell is far from people; those souls and spirits cannot see the sun; they have no clothes to wear, no food to eat,” Om Sam Ol continued. “Phchum Ben is the period when those spirits receive offerings from their living relatives and perhaps gain some relief. Relatives consecrate and dedicate food and other offerings to them.”
